Invisible violence on the internet: what escapes the radar of traditional journalism

Article written by Daniela Osvald Ramos and Filipe Vilicic for the Alterjor Magazine.

Abstract

Based on Abdin’s (2021) identification of the elements that make up the internet considered to be situated “below the radar” and Bergman’s (2001) distinctions between invisible and visible networks, we seek to characterize and problematize the performance of Brazilian journalists in “dark online spaces”. As evidence, we selected reports published between 2016 and 2019, mainly in Veja’s magazine and website. From assumptions, we observe technical and methodological limits that compromise the operations of journalism. To overcome these barriers, whose effects are limiting for the news and informational role of the profession, it is proposed to extend the research with method reviews and the application of alternative forms of verifications.
